Ukraine accedes to the Convention on the Transboundary Effects of Industrial Accidents

The relevant bill, initiated by President Volodymyr Zelensky, was adopted by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

It is important for Ukraine in today’s conditions, when the occupier is shelling industrial facilities and provoking large-scale accidents on our territory, to use all available international legal instruments to protect citizens and the environment from the consequences of the “Russian peace”. This is important for other countries as well, as such accidents carry risks of transboundary impact. Accession to the Convention is a joint effort with European countries, the United States, Canada, enlisting international support and assistance in resolving these issues, “- commented the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources of Ukraine Ruslan Strelets.

What gives Ukraine participation in the Convention:

  • the possibility of full cooperation with other countries parties to the Convention to protect people and the environment from industrial accidents that may have transboundary effects
  • creation of compatible accident alert systems and exchange of information necessary to counter transboundary impact
  • the opportunity to receive assistance under the Convention to increase their capacity and share experiences in the prevention, preparedness and response to accidents.
  • use of the Convention as an additional legal mechanism in the event that an accident occurring in another country has provoked consequences in our territory.

“Participation in the Convention is important for us in peacetime, because it is a joint effort to prevent industrial accidents, development of appropriate methods and technologies, joint conduct of necessary research, exchange of modern technologies in this field,” said the Minister.
