Taiwan keeps providing financial, humanitarian and political assistance to Ukraine

During the second year of the full-scale russia’s military aggression against Ukraine, Taiwan has been supporting Ukrainians with financial, humanitarian and political assistance. The country has allocated over $100 million to support our country and continues to join the sanctions pressure against russia. In particular, the Ministry of Economic Affairs of Taiwan has announced the expansion of the list of goods whose export to russia and belarus is prohibited due to the large-scale russian invasion into Ukraine to    prevent their usage for military purposes.

The Taiwanese authorities condemned russia’s invasion into Ukraine and emphasised that russia “has seriously violated global peace and security by launching the largest military conflict in Europe since the World War II”.

In 2023, Taiwan set aside a special budget of NT$1.8 billion (almost $59 million) for humanitarian aid for Ukraine. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the island country noted that, “as a member of the global democratic alliance,” Taiwan has demonstrated support for the people of Ukraine throughout the war. So far, the country has donated 27 tonnes of medical supplies and more than 700 tonnes of humanitarian aid totalling more than $41 million.

Warsaw sent 38 vehicles to Ukraine for the medical evacuation of wounded soldiers from the combat zone in Ukraine. These include 21 ambulances, 14 emergency vehicles, 2 tankers and 1 trailer. All the vehicles bear the inscriptions “Glory to Ukraine” and “Taiwan supports Ukraine”. The vehicles were donated and transported with the help of the Taiwan Community Development Association, other private charitable groups and the Taiwanese government.

On November 10, the governments of the Czech Republic and Taiwan signed an agreement on joint work to help rebuild Ukraine. The agreement between Taiwan and the Czech Republic, signed by the ambassadors of both countries, provides for joint work to restore water and energy systems. Taiwan’s deputy foreign minister said that the assistance would extend to other sectors to help restore normal life “and bring Ukraine closer to the final victory”.

Earlier, it was reported that Taiwan would help restore the premises of the children’s and youth martial arts school in Bucha. The country has also donated more than $5 million to two projects to rebuild Kyiv region, which are being implemented by Lithuania. In addition, the Government of Taiwan intends to provide $2.5 million to complete the capital’s infrastructure.

Taiwan is an important trading partner for Dnipropetrovsk region, despite a significant decline in exports due to russia’s military aggression. Mutually beneficial trade and economic cooperation remains a top priority for the two countries.

Taiwanese enterprises are most interested in ferrous metal products, optical, photographic, toy, pharmaceutical products, etc. The volume of goods exports from  Dnipropetrovsk region amounted to $175.1 thousand and decreased by 95% compared to 2021.

4 enterprises in Dnipropetrovsk region exported their products to the Taiwanese market, including metallurgical enterprises and trade companies.

In turn, more than 170 importing companies in the region bought Taiwanese goods, namely various chemical products, machinery and equipment, optical, photographic and other devices. Imports of goods from Taiwan to Dnipropetrovsk region decreased by 33.8% to $10.3 million.
