Total cargo turnover of Ukrainian ports reached 7 million tons

In June 2024, Ukrainian seaports handled 1.2 million tons of iron ore compared to 0.2 million tons in June 2023. This was reported by the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority (USPA).

The total cargo turnover of Ukrainian seaports for the month reached 7 million tons, which is 1.5 times higher than in June 2023. Grain was the leading cargo transshipment commodity, with 4.4 mln tons handled compared to 3.4 mln tons a year earlier.

In June, cargo turnover through the Ukrainian corridor amounted to 5.6 million tons, of which 3.6 million tons were products of Ukrainian farmers.

In total, in 6 months of 2024, Ukrainian ports handled 53 million tons (31.2 million tons in 2023), and 6,046 thousand vessels were handled.

As a reminder, in May 2024, seaports handled 1.5 million tons of iron ore compared to 241 thousand tons in May 2023. In total, 8.26 million tons of cargo were handled during the month, almost twice as much as in the same period last year. Grain accounts for the largest volume of cargo turnover, followed by iron ore. In May this year, cargo turnover through the Ukrainian sea corridor amounted to 6.7 million tons, of which 4.5 million tons were products of Ukrainian farmers.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2023, Ukrainian ports increased cargo transshipment by 5% yoy to 62 million tons, with iron ore transshipment accounting for 5.9% of the total cargo turnover, or 1.9 million tons. This can be considered the beginning of the industry’s recovery after the difficult year of 2022, when port cargo turnover fell by 2.6 times compared to pre-war 2021.
