The Law of Ukraine “On State Regulation of Genetic Engineering Activities and State Control over the Placing on the Market of Genetically Modified Organisms and Products” No. 3339-IX of 23 August 2023 is officially entering into force in Ukraine.

The Law had a long transition period, which gave the state and businesses the necessary time to prepare the infrastructure, establish laboratories and launch the relevant registers. The main purpose of the innovations is the implementation of European Union norms and standards into Ukrainian legislation.

Key changes introduced by the Law:

• any use, cultivation or circulation of GMOs is now lawful only subject to official registration in a single digital system, which will allow consumers and the state to trace products in real time.
• duplication of functions between state authorities in the field of GMO handling has been eliminated.
• the system for assessing the impact of GMOs on human health and the environment has been improved.
• new European rules for the labelling of genetically modified products and control over their movement on the market have been introduced.
• strict state supervision and clear liability for violations of legislation in this field have been established.

The Law introduces a transparent and clearly regulated market mechanism, guaranteeing the protection of consumer rights and reliable control over product safety.
