Doing business
The petition to the North Atlantic Alliance to close the airspace over Ukraine gathered more than 1 million votes.
The petition is posted on the European website Open Petition.
Literally the text of the petition: “We, people around the world, are asking NATO member states and Ukraine-friendly countries to close the airspace over Ukraine and deploy peacekeeping troops in Ukraine, provide military assistance to Kyiv and support the Ukrainian people”.
The petition was created on February 26. As of the morning of March 4, it collected 1,091,002 votes (109% of the target). Petitions on the European website Open Petition can be signed by citizens from anywhere in the world.
Since the beginning of the war, the skies over Ukraine have been closed to civil aviation. But Russian warplanes continue to attack Ukrainian cities from the air and launch missile and bomb strikes on civilians.
Closing the skies means that the skies are patrolled by military aircraft and protected by air defense systems. When the sky is closed, all military planes that fly into a closed area – get lost.
The people who signed the petition are asking NATO to shelter the sky over Ukraine. If NATO closed the skies, it would be its military forces that would patrol the skies and shoot down planes that violate the ban.
