On June 23, the leaders of the 27 EU member states decided to grant Ukraine candidate status for EU membership.
“We welcome this historic decision of the European Union, which in fact means that a large family of European Union countries see Ukraine as a member of the EU. In these difficult times, the EU heard the people of Ukraine and clearly stated that our state belongs to Europe, we have a strong common future, – commented on the decision of the Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine Olga Stefanishina. – Candidate status officially launches the process of Ukraine’s accession to the EU. We are already actively working on further steps and reforming the country despite the war, so as not to lose the pace of our integration. “
The official noted that further preparations for membership will include the completion of a comprehensive transformation of all spheres, which will create conditions for the country to live by the principles of the European Union and its laws, which are aimed at protecting every citizen and business. This will create the conditions for bringing the standard of living, well-being and legal protection of Ukrainians closer, as in other EU countries. Ukraine will be constantly supported by the European Commission, providing the necessary advice and other assistance.
In addition, candidate status opens up opportunities for financial assistance in the transformation of society, the legal system and the economy on the path to EU membership, and will keep the country’s European integration reforms a priority.
Ukraine will have access to financial assistance for countries preparing to join the EU (Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance, IPA). Such assistance may be provided through grants, investments or as technical assistance. The candidacy also opens for Ukraine participation in EU programs and initiatives.
