Romania continues to provide comprehensive and strong support to Ukraine

Romania continues to support Ukraine in its fight against russian aggression through various humanitarian, diplomatic and military measures. In addition, it actively supports the European Union’s sanctions against russia, advocates for the strengthening of these sanctions and constantly expresses solidarity with Ukraine on international platforms such as the UN and NATO.

On 11 July 2024, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the President of Romania Klaus Iohannis signed the Ukraine-Romania Security Cooperation Agreement in Washington, DC. According to the agreement, official Bucharest emphasises its unwavering support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders since 1991, including the territorial sea.

Romania is helping Ukraine rebuild its energy infrastructure damaged during the war. It also supplies electricity to Ukraine as needed. The country has become the main supplier of fuel for our country, accounting for almost a third of imports of petrol, diesel and liquefied gas.

Bucharest provides significant humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, including food, medical supplies and medical care, ensuring air medical evacuation to other countries for wounded Ukrainians. Since the beginning of the full-scale aggression, the Suceava Humanitarian Hub was established in the city of Suceava, in the Maramures region, a region historically home to Romania’s ethnic Ukrainians, to enhance the logistical capabilities of the aid effort.

At the same time, the country supports Ukraine with military aid, providing equipment and weapons. Kyiv received a dozen and a half packages of military aid from Bucharest, including armoured personnel carriers, howitzers, 122 mm MLRS, anti-tank grenade launchers, 12.7 mm machine guns, large quantities of 152 mm and 122 mm ammunition, etc. Despite the fact that Romania has actively provided and continues to provide military support to Ukraine, the official Bucharest has decided not to publicise it.

In September 2024, Romania handed over the promised Patriot system to Ukraine in the most advanced PAC-3+ configuration, which is capable of effectively intercepting ballistic missiles. It was provided as military assistance.

Bucharest will help the F-16 training centre to train Ukrainian pilots and support our country’s defence industry. The country also cooperates with other NATO members to provide Ukraine with the necessary resources and facilitates the fastest possible transit of all necessary equipment through its territory to Ukraine.

In addition, Romania provides its ports for the export of Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea, as the blockade of Ukrainian ports has made this route critical for global trade and the Ukrainian economy.

Romania, together with its partners, will support humanitarian demining efforts and provide assistance for humanitarian demining in Ukraine, including financial, logistical support and training.

In addition, in the summer of 2024, Romania, Turkey and Bulgaria launched joint mine action operations in the Black Sea to improve the safety of navigation, in particular for Ukrainian grain exports. The initiative is the first major joint action by the Black Sea countries after the full-scale invasion of russia, aimed at clearing russian mines drifting in some areas of the Black Sea as a result of military aggression.

The development of bilateral trade and economic cooperation also remains an important priority for the two countries. Romania is also an important trading partner for Dnipropetrovsk region. The volume of goods exported from Dnipropetrovsk region was $282.3 million. The region’s share in all-Ukrainian exports to Romania is 7.5%.
