On June 4, the European Commission approved the first list of 13 strategic projects located outside the EU that are aimed at diversifying sources of strategic raw materials and enhancing the economic security of the union, the European Commission’s press service reported.
Six of these projects are located in countries with strategic partnerships with the EU (Ukraine, Canada, Kazakhstan, Norway, Serbia, Zambia), two in overseas territories (Greenland and New Caledonia), and the rest in Brazil, Madagascar, Malawi, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.
Ten projects concern materials for electric vehicles and batteries (lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, graphite), two concern rare earth elements for wind turbines and electric motors, as well as copper, tungsten, and boron for various industries.
The Ukrainian project is the Balakhovka graphite deposit. The project is being promoted by POBUZHZHYA’S DEVELOPMENT LLC from the BGV Group and is aimed at supplying battery-grade graphite.
