Dnipropetrovsk region agrarian: production volumes and foreign trade

Dnipropetrovsk region is one of the most economically developed regions of Ukraine. In terms of population, contribution to the national production of gross domestic product, the scale of industrial and agricultural production, the volume of goods exports and budget revenues, it occupies leading places among other regions of Ukraine.

Dnipropetrovsk region, among the regions of Ukraine, ranks:

  • 9th in terms of the volume of agricultural products sold in 2020 UAH 22,823.6 million (5.18%)
  • 9th in terms of sales of crop production, in 2020 UAH 19665.7 million (5.34%)
  • 7th in terms of the volume of sold livestock products in 2020 UAH 3,157.9 million (4.36%)

The region is a leader among the regions of Ukraine in the cultivation of the following grains and legumes:

  • Rapeseed – 249726.3 tons (11.5%) – 1st place among the regions of Ukraine
  • Sunflower – 669579.7 tons (6.9%) – 2nd place
  • Mustard – 1266.6 tons (8.9%) – 4th place
  • Barley – 285 581.6 t (8%) – 4th place
  • Peas – 25059.5 tons (7.4%) – 4th place
  • Wheat – 1120138.7 t (7.35%) – 5th place

In the categories of vegetable and fruit crops, the Dnipropetrovsk region is leading in terms of the following indicators:

  • Cabbage – 26347.5 tons (45%) – 1st place among the regions of Ukraine
  • Sweet pepper – 1160.8 tons (28.15%) – 1st place
  • Cucumbers – 10156.4 tons (25.41%) – 1st place
  • Beetroot – 5611.4 tons (19.59%) – 1st place
  • Potatoes – 30979.9 tons (12.35%) – 2nd place
  • Apples – 12,812.1 tons (8.9%) – 3rd place
  • Pears – 616 tons (16.44%) – 3rd place
  • Onions – 8,426.3 tons (10.68%) – 5th place

Dnipropetrovsk region makes a significant contribution to the production of livestock products in Ukraine, occupying leading positions in terms of production volumes:

  • Poultry farming – 254 789 tons (15.69%) – 3rd place among the regions of Ukraine
  • Raising sheep and goats – 117 tons (3.57%) – 5th place
  • Growing pigs – 38658 tons (6.88%) – 6th place
  • Egg production – 761 200 000 pcs. (4.7%) – 7th place
  • Honey production – 34.9 tons (5.49%) – 8th place

In 2020, the Dnipropetrovsk region exported agricultural products in the amount of $367.6 million (2.1% of the all-Ukrainian indicator).

The region exported most of all:

  • grain crops – by $44.7 million,
  • meat and edible offal – by $22.2 million,
  • seeds and fruits of oilseeds – by $22.2 million.

The export of agricultural products makes up 5% of the total export of the region and is exported to almost 100 countries of the world: Italy, Indonesia, France, Egypt, Belarus, Turkey, China and other countries.

Last year, the region made $275.9 million in import operations (8.3% of the all-Ukrainian indicator). The enterprises of the region in 2020 most of all bought:

  • fats and oils of vegetable origin in the amount of $57.7 million (21% of the total import of agricultural products),
  • milk and dairy products by $52.1 million (18.9%),
  • edible fruits and nuts for $47.3 million (17.1%).

Agricultural imports make up 6% of the region’s total imports and products are imported from more than 70 countries around the world: Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, Poland, Finland, Malaysia, Sweden, Great Britain and other countries.

Agricultural products that are more in demand among both exporters and importers are fats and oils of vegetable and animal origin.
