Ukraine became a member of the EU language space

On March 21, at an extraordinary meeting of the General Assembly of the European Federation of National Institutions for Language (EFNIL) it was unanimously decided to grant Ukraine the status of an associate member of EFNIL.

This was reported by the Commissioner for the protection of the state language Taras Kremin.

EFNIL unites national language institutions of European Union member states. Among the main tasks of the federation – control over the implementation of language legislation, protection of state languages, collecting materials about language policy in the EU, promoting the study of official European languages for the sake of linguistic and cultural diversity in the EU.

Membership in EFNIL will allow Ukraine to create a strategy of legislative protection of the Ukrainian language as a future language of the EU. As Taras Kremin noted, the struggle for language is a struggle for the identity of the Ukrainian nation.
