Ukrainian steelmakers produced 5.37 million tons of rolled steel in 2023

Steel production for the year was 6.23 million tons, and pig iron – 6 million tons

Ukrainian steel enterprises increased rolled steel production by 0.4% in 2023 compared to 2022, to 5.37 million tons. This is evidenced by the data of Ukrmetalurgprom.

Pig iron production during the year amounted to 6 million tons, which is 6.1% less than in 2022, and steel production amounted to 6.23 million tons (-0.6% y/y).

In December 2023, Ukrainian steelmakers increased production of rolled steel by 1.8% compared to the previous month – to 508 thousand tons. Steel production for the month decreased by 4.4% m/m – to 520.4 thousand tons, while pig iron production increased by 2.8% m/m – to 556.7 thousand tons.

Compared to December 2022, in December 2023, the production of rolled products increased by 4.7 times, steel – by 3.9 times, and pig iron – by 2.2 times.

A temporary corridor to and from the ports of Greater Odesa was launched in August this year. In November, 14 vessels exported a total of 620 thousand tons of iron ore and 140 thousand tons of steel products from Odesa and Pivdennyi ports.

In October, the Ukrainian steel industry exported approximately 507 kt of iron ore (four bulk carriers from Pivdennyi) and 213.5 kt of steel products (two vessels from Odesa) through the ports of Greater Odesa.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2022, Ukrainian steelmakers reduced steel production by 70.7% compared to 2021, to 6.26 million tons. Rolled steel production dropped by 72% y/y – to 5.35 million tons, while pig iron production fell by 69.8% y/y – to 6.39 million tons.
