Doing business
Ukrainian honey has outstanding taste and medicinal properties. Favourable natural and climatic conditions and a variety of honey plants have made Ukraine a leader of honey production and export in Europe.
According to customs statistics, in 2022, Ukrainian honey exports totalled 48 thousand tonnes, which is 17% lower than previous year, while due to a 15% increase in the average selling price, export revenue in monetary terms decreased by only 4.6% to $137 million.
Since the beginning of the war, the regions of Ukraine with the most developed beekeeping have been under temporary occupation or damaged by hostilities – Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Sumy, Luhansk, Donetsk, Mykolaiv, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia.
A perspective direction for the development of beekeeping is the creation of value chains and the activation of the domestic market, both through the promotion of honey consumption and the offer of consumer-friendly packaging. In this context, a small enterprise founded by an individual entrepreneur (Horbonos A.M.) in Dnipropetrovsk region is engaged in the packaging of natural honey and has an investment project to create a modern enterprise with a capacity of 300 tonnes of honey per year.
This investment project aims to support domestic beekeeping by ordering honey of traditional varieties (acacia, linden, sunflower, buckwheat), which will create value chains, especially advanced honey processing.
Currently, the company’s core business is purchasing honey from beekeepers, packing it in glass and plastic containers, labelling and packing it. In addition to packaging natural honey – up to 5 tonnes of finished products per year – the company sells it on the market, promotes and marketing the product using various sales channels.
The project initiator aims to develop and expand its own production by purchasing a modern blending line and packaging honey in a wide range of containers. It is also planned to rent a production facility and hire 10 employees at the start of the enterprise.
In addition, the project envisages the creation of a line of a unique honey packaging method called “Kraplia medu”, which can be used not only for honey but also for other products such as sauces, jams, etc.
The company’s investment needs are estimated at $82 thousand. Main mechanisms of cooperation with the investor are the establishment of a joint venture, attraction of direct investments or credit financing.
