NPC Ukrenergo has become a full member of the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E). This is stated in the company’s press release.
This decision was made on December 14, 2023, by the supreme governing body of ENTSO-E – the General Assembly. From January 1, 2024, the Ukrainian power system operator will become the 40th member of the association.
«Membership of Ukrenergo in ENTSO-E opens a new stage of cooperation between Ukrainian and European energy system operators as equal participants in the European energy space,» the company’s statement reads.
Zbynek Boldiš, President of ENTSO-E, congratulated Ukrenergo on joining ENTSO-E as a full member.
«This achievement marks the end of one journey and the beginning of another. The first journey was marked by the emergency synchronization on March 16, 2022, the signing of the observer membership agreement in April 2022, and the completion of the synchronization project on November 28, 2023. Now we are starting a new path, where Ukrenergo will take its full place among the European TSOs. Together, we will be stronger in promoting and building a resilient, stable and integrated European electricity grid,» he noted.
As Ukrenergo explained, the Ukrainian power system operator will have access to all the rights and obligations of a full member of ENTSO-E. It will have the right to vote during the meetings of the Association’s General Assembly and the Board of the association, i.e., it will influence the adoption of strategic decisions on the functioning and development of the pan-European power grid. Ukrenergo’s voice will be the fourth largest consumer in the grid after France, Italy and Spain. There are four system operators in Germany that have an equal number of points in the voting.
«Ukrenergo will also participate in ENTSO-E committees on market issues, grid development, research, development and innovation, etc. and their working groups, and may also participate in the development of grid codes.
«The interconnection of the Ukrainian power system with the continental European grid and now the status of a full member of ENTSO-E mark another important milestone for Ukraine on its way to European integration. This is an important historical step that will significantly contribute to improving energy security, resilience of our power system, as well as stability of electricity supply,» noted Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, Chairman of the Board of Ukrenergo.
