In the first six months of 2026, 155,600 TEU were transported by rail in Ukraine, which is 36% above last year’s volumes and the best result in the past six years.

According to Valerii Tkachov, Deputy Director of the Department of Transportation Technology and Commercial Operations at JSC Ukrzaliznytsia, who presented the data during a meeting with container shippers, 155,595 TEU were carried by rail in January–June 2026. He specified that the current figure is a record for the past six years.

At the same time, despite the overall decline in transportation volumes, the share of containers in the freight traffic structure is, on the contrary, growing — to a record 4.5%. For comparison: in 2024 this indicator stood at 3.6%, and last year at 3.4%.

Tkachov also spoke about the structure of container transportation: 58% is accounted for by exports, among which agricultural products (grain, oil, meal) and metallurgical products predominate. A further 31% is imports, consisting mainly of polymers and plastics, household appliances and machinery. The remaining 11% is domestic transportation, where agricultural products, chemicals and ferrous metals dominate.

In addition, the share of use of fitting platforms (container flatcars) of the “Liski” Transport Service Center branch of JSC Ukrzaliznytsia has grown — from 21% last year to 34% this year.

In the first five months of 2026, rail container transportation grew by 43%.
