The Ukrainian industrial company Interpipe has delivered its first batch of ULT35 wheel sets. The products will be used in the construction of heavy-duty railcars, with a steel mill in northern Sweden serving as the end customer. This was announced in a company statement.
The ULT35 wheel set from Interpipe’s own Ultimate line was developed by the company’s R&D specialists specifically for railcars designed for heavy-haul transport. The new product can withstand a maximum axle load of up to 35 tons, which is significantly higher than the 20–25 tons more common in the freight segment.
Railcars with an axle load of 35 tons are used in a limited number of countries for specialized purposes, as the increased weight requires reinforced railway infrastructure. In addition, significantly higher requirements are placed on wheels and axles in terms of strength and wear resistance.
“This design will become the new standard for our long-standing partner—a Swedish railcar manufacturer specializing in heavy railcars. The wheel set was designed specifically for 35 tons, but the design allows it to be used on railcars with lower loads as well. “In this way, we have managed to extend the service life of the wheels and potentially reduce the customer’s required inventory of wheels and wheel sets for railcar repairs,” noted Niklas Eriksson, Interpipe’s lead sales specialist for railway products in the European market.
Interpipe is a Ukrainian industrial company and a manufacturer of steel pipes and railway products. The company’s products are supplied to more than 70 countries worldwide through a network of sales offices located in key markets in the Middle East, North America, and Europe. In 2025, Interpipe sold 470,000 tons of pipe products and 89,000 tons of railway products. Railway products are sold under the KLW brand.
Interpipe’s total workforce is approximately 9,500. The number of our employees serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine or other law enforcement agencies stands at 1,150.
As a reminder, Interpipe previously shipped custom-designed wheels for ore-carrying trains in Scandinavia. For this order, Interpipe developed a modified wheel from its own Ultimate line of railway products. The newly created ULT 25 LL (Long Life) has a diameter of 920 mm and a longer service life thanks to optimized tread geometry.
