Spring grain crops exceeded last year’s levels by 4.4%

As of mid-June, Ukrainian farmers had sown 5.88 million hectares with spring grain and leguminous crops, which is 4.4% more than last year.

According to operational data, this result was driven by corn and peas, the sown areas of which exceeded last year’s figures by 8.4% and 22.1% respectively, reaching 4.37 million hectares and 259,700 hectares.

At the same time, sown areas of other spring grain and leguminous crops declined: barley — by 5.3%, to 713,600 hectares; wheat — by 15.6%, to 186,600 hectares; oats — by 13.5%, to 137,500 hectares; buckwheat — by 30.8%, to 55,100 hectares; millet — by 46.3%, to 38,500 hectares.

Other spring grain and leguminous crops were sown on 119,900 hectares, which is 14.5% more than last year’s figure.

The largest areas under grain and leguminous crops were sown by farmers in the Poltava, Chernihiv, Vinnytsia, and Kyiv regions. As the ministry noted, the leading regions recorded the following results: Poltava Region — 594,100 hectares (wheat — 4,900 ha, barley — 65,100 ha, peas — 12,100 ha, oats — 1,900 ha, corn — 502,500 ha); Chernihiv Region — 572,900 hectares (wheat — 10,000 ha, barley — 15,000 ha, peas — 9,200 ha, oats — 16,800 ha, corn — 512,300 ha); Vinnytsia Region — 481,600 hectares (wheat — 10,000 ha, barley — 55,000 ha, peas — 8,000 ha, oats — 1,000 ha, corn — 396,100 ha); and Kyiv Region — 424,300 hectares (wheat — 25,600 ha, barley — 39,000 ha, peas — 5,500 ha, oats — 6,000 ha, corn — 336,000 ha).

In parallel, sowing of industrial crops is nearing completion, with 7.04 million hectares sown. A lag behind last year’s sowing campaign has been recorded, during which 7.62 million hectares had been sown by 13 June.

While sunflower sown areas this year are lower by just 3.1% — at 4.86 million hectares — those of soybeans are down by 16.6%, at 1.99 million hectares, and sugar beet by 12.5%, at 190,000 hectares.

Expectations for this season are cautiously optimistic: the total harvest of grains and oilseeds is expected to reach 81–83 million tonnes.

In particular, grain production is forecast at 60–61 million tonnes, in line with last year’s figures. The wheat harvest is expected to be lower — at 22–23 million tonnes — due to a reduction in sown areas and more conservative yield forecasts, while corn output may exceed 32 million tonnes and barley around 5 million tonnes.

The ministry added that the oilseed harvest is expected to be stronger: sunflower production may exceed 12 million tonnes, which is almost 16% more than last year; rapeseed — 3.5 million tonnes; soybeans — around 5 million tonnes.

According to State Statistics Service data, last year grain production totalled 61.04 million tonnes, including wheat — 23.34 million tonnes, corn — 30.9 million tonnes, and barley — 5.2 million tonnes.

The gross harvest of oilseeds in 2025 was as follows: sunflower — 10.24 million tonnes, rapeseed — 3.21 million tonnes, soybeans — 4.98 million tonnes.
