Ukraine and EU launch new green recovery project

The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine has announced the launch of EU4Green Recovery East, a new project of Ukraine and the European Union. The initiative is aimed at developing a circular economy, sustainable water management, and environmental data management. The initiative covers the Eastern Partnership countries and will help to advance reforms.

About the project

The program will last for four years and has a total budget of €21.5 million. The project focuses on five key components:

  • promoting a circular economy;
  • ensuring water management as a critical resource;
  • promoting legislative approximation with EU environmental legislation;
  • strengthening integration into EU environmental cooperation and data exchange;
  • promoting cross-border environmental cooperation.

For Ukraine, which is on the verge of large-scale reconstruction, these are great opportunities and substantial assistance.

Together with UNDP, Ukraine is currently working on a draft law “On Green Recovery,” which is fully consistent with the Green Taxonomy and EU experience. It will become a strategy for sustainable reconstruction of Ukraine.

In addition, EU4Green Recovery East offers opportunities for Ukrainian businesses to increase resource efficiency and create new jobs.

The first steps have already been taken in preparing a work plan to adapt the Program’s activities to the specific needs of Ukraine. Technical meetings of experts in the relevant fields are ahead.

For reference:

  • EU4Green Recovery East is a regional program that supports the entire EU Eastern Partnership region.
  • The program is implemented by five partners: Expertise France together with the French International Office for Water (OiEau), OECD, UNECE, UNIDO and the Austrian Environment Agency (UBA), as the consortium coordinator.
