Ukraine increased imports of flat rolled steel by 12.7% y/y in January-October

During January-October 2025, 928.2 thousand tons of flat rolled steel were supplied to the Ukrainian market, which is 12.7% more than in the same period of 2024. This is evidenced by GMK Center calculations based on data from the State Customs Service.

About 50% of imports are coated flat products (HS code 7210) – 456.5 thousand tons, which is 17.1% more than in the same period last year. The main suppliers of products during the period were Turkey – 242.54 thousand tons, Poland – 52.38 thousand tons, and Slovakia – 44.91 thousand tons.

Another 32.2% of supplies, or 298.79 thousand tons (+5.5% y/y), accounted for flat hot-rolled products (HS code 7208). The key source of supplies of these products is Turkey – 236.8 thousand tons. Another 37.06 thousand tons were imported from China, and 5.67 thousand tons from Italy.

In January-October, 84.29 thousand tons of flat cold-rolled products (HS code 7209) were imported, which is 19.5% more y/y. Turkey imported 64.17 thousand tons of the corresponding products, China – 15.3 thousand tons, and Slovakia – 3.97 thousand tons.

In October, Ukrainian consumers imported 96.02 thousand tons of flat rolled products, which is 9.6% more year-on-year and 3.8% less month-on-month. Supplies of coated flat-rolled products amounted to 47.09 thousand tons (+22.5% y/y; -0.8% m/m), hot-rolled flat-rolled products – 36.41 thousand tons (+19.1% y/y; +5.3% m/m), and cold-rolled flat products – 4.98 thousand tons (-54.8% y/y; -39.8% m/m).

Expenditures on flat rolled steel imports in January-October increased by 7% y/y – to $973.67 million, while in October they decreased by 2.9% y/y and 12.4% m/m – to $93.02 million.

It should be noted that, in 2024, 983.49 thousand tons of flat rolled steel were supplied to the Ukrainian market, which exceeds the 2023 figure by 8.3%.

About half of the imports were coated flat products – 468.61 thousand tons (+7% y/y). Another 34.7% of supplies, or 341.21 thousand tons (+8.7% y/y), accounted for hot-rolled flat products, and 79.31 thousand tons (-0.9% y/y) for cold-rolled flat products.

The cost of flat rolled steel imports in 2024 increased by 5% y/y – to $1.08 billion.
