Norway will allocate over $102 million to Ukraine to restore energy infrastructure

Norway is providing Ukraine with Norwegian kroner 1.1 billion (more than $102 million) to restore energy infrastructure damaged by Russian attacks. This is stated on the government website.

“We are in close dialogue with Ukraine on how it can use these funds most effectively. Ukrainians themselves understand best what is needed. But it is important to start repairing infrastructure quickly, before the onset of winter. Norway hopes that this new funding will help to mitigate some of the damage and ensure electricity in Ukraine,” said Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

It is emphasized that Russian attacks on energy facilities in Ukraine have made the security of critical infrastructure “a key issue in Ukraine, as well as one of the main areas of the Nansen Support Program for Ukraine, established by Norway,” the statement said.

The government added that 120 million Norwegian kroner will be allocated through the United Nations Development Program to repair the energy infrastructure that provides electricity to the Kharkiv region. The region, as emphasized in Norway, was particularly affected by Russian attacks this spring.

“This funding will help, among other things, to ensure stable power supply to maternity units and operating rooms of 7 hospitals in Kharkiv region. In some cases, access to electricity can mean a matter of life and death,” Støre added.

Earlier it was reported that Norway would help build a power grid for hospitals in Kharkiv. The Prime Minister said that his country is ready to support Ukraine not only in its right to self-defense, but also to provide civilian assistance.
