Canada extends preferential trade regime for Ukrainian goods

The Canadian Government has extended for another 12 months a regulation that eliminates customs duties on Ukrainian goods imports. This was announced by Ukraine’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy, Yuliia Svyrydenko.

“I would like to thank the Canadian Government for supporting Ukraine during the war. Extending the preferential trade regime for Ukrainian goods will bolster Ukrainian exports, preserve jobs, and strengthen the economy amid wartime conditions. This will enable more Ukrainian producers to engage in global trade and supply chains,” Yuliia Svyrydenko stated.

Ukrainian goods will continue to enjoy duty-free access to the Canadian market until 9 June 2026.

Canada’s Minister of Finance and National Revenue, François-Philippe Champagne, stated that Canada had reaffirmed its commitment to a just and lasting peace in Ukraine through military, financial, and humanitarian support. He noted that the decision underscored this support, fostering Ukraine’s economic resilience and demonstrating Canada’s resolve to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Ukraine for as long as necessary.

Background

The decree exempting Ukrainian goods from customs duties came into effect on 9 June 2022 for an initial one-year period and has been renewed annually since.

Since the preferential regime’s introduction in 2022, Ukrainian exports under this programme to Canada have exceeded USD 35 million, with Canadian importers saving USD 8.5 million in duties. The extension offers potential savings of an additional USD 1.2 million. Total exports to Canada in 2024 amounted to USD 152 million.

Since the onset of the full-scale invasion, Canada has provided over USD 8 billion in support to Ukraine.
