Ukraine and Germany launch joint project to equip critical infrastructure with renewable energy sources

Ukraine and Germany are launching the Renewables for a Resilient Ukraine – R2U project targeting Ukrainian communities. This is the first stage of implementation of the agreements signed in Kyiv by Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko and Vice-Chancellor of Germany Robert Habeck to deepen the German-Ukrainian energy partnership with a focus on green renewable energy and energy recovery in Ukraine.

As part of the project, up to 20 communities will be selected to undergo energy audits of critical infrastructure buildings for further equipping them with renewable energy sources. The project will last for 18 months and is worth about EUR 2 million.

The details of the project launch were discussed during the online presentation by Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine Yaroslav Demchenkov, representatives of the R2U project, GIZ Ukraine, and other involved organisations.

“It is very important that the agreements between the ministers are being implemented. With this project, we are expanding our cooperation with German partners aimed at strengthening the resilience of the Ukrainian energy system through decentralisation of electricity generation and distribution. The future belongs to a decentralised system where consumers can produce, use, share, store and control clean energy without intermediaries. We must make efforts to rebuild our communities with renewable green energy, especially paying attention to rural areas, coal mining regions and those that have suffered the greatest destruction from the war. We will use the experience gained to further scale up, replicate and create similar projects,” said Yaroslav Demchenkov, Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine, during the project presentation.

The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine is implementing a project to equip critical infrastructure buildings with solar panels with the support of the European Commission, in particular European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson. In the first phase, Ukraine is expected to receive 5,700 solar panels of 350 W each, with a total capacity of about 2 MW. The solar panels, manufactured by Italy’s Enel, will be installed to meet the needs of key public buildings and critical infrastructure, including Ukrainian hospitals.
